Full Description

Remains of a fishing station. A single building is shown on the OS 1st edition map. Two smaller structures had been added to the west by the time of the 2nd edition which also shows a flagstaff to the southeast of the earlier building. Recorded in May 2023 as part of SCAPE Coastal Zone Assessment Survey. The original structure was a single room, rubble walls bonded and harled with lime mortar, with a central door and two windows on the south wall. The later extension to the west is of breeze block construction and cement. The south wall and gables are cement rendered. The buildings are associated with an icehouse (see also NJ90SE0120) and a rocky landing beach with access track/slipway cut into the coast edge revetted by drystone walling on the south side. Numerous boulders on the beach have remains of iron fittings in them presumably once supporting a railed slipway. No remains of winches survive except for one half buried iron chain. A concrete foundation at the top of the cliff (NJ90SE0130) may be the base of a cable mechanism or Blondin apparatus to haul fish and gear from the landing bay to the top of the cliff.
