Full Description

Warehouse occupying the site of an earlier tenement. The tenement was double-fronted on Shiprow with a covered pend leading to a small enclosed court, Webster's Court. Historic maps suggest this had been constructed by the the late 18th century. The site was comprehensively cleared and rebuilt as a bonded warehouse in the late 19th century, possibly around 1875. The present building is 3-storey, of granite masonry with a piended slate roof. The lower floor has parallel double brick vaults which appear to have been built on the old medieval plot lines. The top floor appears to have been used mainly as office accommodation. There were some alterations in the 20th century, including changes to the openings of the loading bay doors. C and W Stewart wine merchants appear to have occupied the premises from the early 1870s, shared with a tea merchant, and Stewart's use continued into the second half of the 20th century. The property was vacant by the mid 1960s.
