Full Description

Memorial to the architect Archibald Simpson (1790-1847) who was born in Aberdeen and educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and Marischal College. He first established his architectural practice in 1813. Simpson became a master of the Gothic and Classical styles, working in brick and granite on both public and domestic buildings. Amongst his designs are the Athenaeum building in the Castlegate, Bon-Accord Square and Bon-Accord Crescent. Simpson is buried in the graveyard of St Nicholas' Kirk. The memorial, in rough hewn granite was erected in 1975 to commemorate the architect who contributed so much to laying out the city. Inscribed on the stone is: Archibald Simpson, Architect 1790-1847 'A pioneer of civic design in this his native city'.
