Full Description

Tenement, in residential and commercial use, built in the early 19th century with Numbers 117-119 built in 1900 by Robert Wilson and further later alterations. It is a three-storey and attic, 19-bay classical row of tenements with altered shops to ground and a distinctive first floor to Numbers 117 and 119 (Robert Wilson, 1900). There are some band courses, a cornice and blocking course, some round-arched openings to the east and west side elevations and piended dormers. Predominantly plate glass, four and 12-pane timber sash and case windows are used to the upper storeys and plate glass to the shops. There are ridge and wallhead stacks. On the wall facing the top of Back Wynd Stairs is a blue plaque commemorating James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879), pioneering physicist of electromagnetic radiation, molecular science and colourimetry. Maxwell lived at No.125 from 1856 to 1960 while Professor at Marischal College.
