Full Description
Former College of Nursing Club building, now in use as a nursing home, dating from the 19th century with later additions and alterations including 1927 additions by Kelly and Nicol. Now part of a nursing home which also includes the formerly separate 19th century building at the east end. The OS 2nd edition map shows the main building then named Roundhay with gardens to the south (now largely built over), and a separate property to the east. The latter is annotated as a manse on the 3rd edition map. The 1955 OS 1:1250 map shows that the former Roundhay had by then been extended and become the Cowdray Club. The building is two-storey, basement and attic, of five bays and constructed from tooled coursed grey granite ashlar with contrasting white granite long and short dressings, finely finished to the margins. There is a rough-faced basement with segmental-arched windows, a white granite band course, eaves course, overhanging eaves course, piend-roofed dormers to the attic floor and predominantly two-pane timber sash and case windows. The principal (north) elevation has a slightly advance central entrance bay with stone steps oversailing the basement leading to a pilastered, segmental pedimented doorpiece. At the second floor is a small corbelled balcony with decorative iron railings, and above is a blind shield set in the gablehead. THe 1927 additional to the east is harled and has an architraved granite Cowdray emblem to the centre. The piended grey slate roof has lead ridges, corniced ridge and gablehead stacks with circular cans and cast-iron rainwater goods. There is a low granite ashlar boundary wall to the north and a granite rubble wall with rough-faced coping swept down to the west. Now also part of the nursing home, the adjoining Number 1 Fonthill Road was built in 1874 by Duncan McMillan. On the 3rd edition OS map it is annotated as a manse.
Period Notes
Listed 29/02/2000. Built in the late 19th century with later additions and alterations including additions in 1927. The adjoining 1 Fonthill Road was built in 1874.
