Full Description
Villa, designed Matthews and Mackenzie, 1882, depicted on the OS 2nd edition with garden and outbuildings to the rear. It is a two-storey, basement and attic, three-bay villa built with tooled coursed grey granite that is finely finished to the margins. It has a basement course rising to form a moulded cill course at the ground floor, long and short quoins in contrasting light grey granite, corniced architraved windows to the ground and first floors with pilastered mullions, Ionic capitals to the ground floor, a dividing band course, deep eaves course, overhanging eaves on modillion brackets. Windows are predominantly two-pane timber sash and case. The principal (northwest) elevation has a slightly advanced central bay with advanced Ionic columned porch, and entablature supporting a diminutive Ionic columned balustrade forming a first floor balcony. On the southeast elevation tripartite windows form a balcony to the first floor with geometric iron railings. The piended grey slate roof has lead ridges, corniced ridge stacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Many interior features remain including elaborate plaster ceilings, a mosaic porch floor, a panelled hall with timber fluted Ionic columns and pilasters, a dog leg stair with turned balusters and an Ionic pilastered newel post, a nine-light stained-glass stair window, and a service stair to the west with iron balusters. There are squat square-plan rough-faced granite gatepiers and piers at angles to the north with deeply stop-chamfered angles and low, rough-faced granite walls flanking with the railings removed and high granite and brick coped rubble walls to the remainder.
