Full Description
Commercial and residential buildings, still in use as such, designed in 1885-86 by Alexander Marshall Mackenzie (for Matthew and Mackenzie Architects). It is a substantial three-storey and attic, L-plan block of buildings in the Renaissance style, comprising two distinct designs that are sympathetically treated to create a well-integrated run. The buildings are constructed with grey granite ashlar with red Correnie granite dressings. Nos 46-50 is a 7-bay corner building with shops to the ground floor, splayed to the southeast with fluted pilasters to the first floor. Plinthed urns above the cornice flank a prominent angled pilastered dormer with a fish-scaled roof and cast iron crown. There are five segmental dormers on the Schoolhill elevation. Nos 54-70 is a corner building with splayed southwest corner with stone mullioned tripartite openings for the first and second floors. Giant pilasters with Ionic capitals terminate the second and third storey bays at the south and west elevations. The west elevation has a triangular pedimented gable at the south end with a ketystoned occulus. There are plate-glass timber sash and case windows throughout. The grey slate roof has red granite ashlar ridge and end stacks, clay cans and cast-iron rainwater goods. On the front of No.68 is a commemorative plaque to James Leatham (1865 - 1945), socialist, propagandist and journalist who lived here between 1911 and 1913.
