Full Description
Tenement, in residential and commercial use, built before 1828. It is a four-storey and attic, five-bay, grey granite ashlar, classical tenement building with altered shops to the ground floor, piended dormers and a rubble rear elevation. Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows are used, some tilt and turn, and plate glass to the shops. The grey slate roof has gable stacks. At ground level is a segmental arched pend opening on the far left (east) leading to Adelphi. A plaque on the wall to the right of the pend outlines the history of Adelphi Court, which was named for John and Robert Adam, who designed the Adelphi off the Strand, London ('The Adelphi' meaning brothers in Greek). The lane was laid out on the crest of St Katherine's Hill in the early 19th century. On the Union Street facing wall left of the pend is a plaque added in 2022 to commemorate firefighter William Fraser who died in the line of duty at Adelphi Court on 2nd March 1909.
Period Notes
Listed 12/01/1967. Built before 1828 when it appears on the John Wood map, and after 1794 when Union Street was planned.
