Full Description
Villa, currently in use as a bank, built in 1865, designed by J Russell Mackenzie with ironwork by Walter Macfarlane and with later additions and alterations. It is a single-storey, basement and attic, L-plan villa with a two-storey, basement and attic tower and French detailing, and is constructed from tooled coursed granite ashlar that is finely finished to margins. Features include a base course, basket-arched windows to the principal floor with stop-chamfered reveals, a diving band course and cornice, shouldered windows to attic floor, an eaves course, strip quoins and a variety of timber sash and case windows and casement windows. The grey slate roof has lead ridges, corniced wallhead stacks with octagonal cans with diamond patterned shafts and cast-iron rainwater goods. Inside, the principal floor has been predominantly remodelled although some mouldings survive to the first floor, including decorative mouldings to the coved lightwell in the hall. There are square-plan gatepiers with pyramidal caps and coped boundary walls. On the front of the building is a commemorative plaque to the first photographer Royal, George Washington Wilson (1823-1893) who lived in this house.
