Full Description

Hotel, still in use as such, with an 1848 core, late 19th century alterations and extensions by James Souttar, and an upper storey addition and front façade added in 1937 by Marshall Mackenzie and Son. It is a four-storey and attic, 12-bay hotel built on a sloping corner site, now largely Art-Deco in appearance. The building is constructed from grey granite ashlar with a base course, band courses, moulded arrises to the ground windows, predominantly four-pane timber sash and case windows with horns to the upper storeys, plate glass to the ground with timber glazing bars and metal casement windows above the entrance. There is a canted, recessed door to the central entrance bay with a recessed moulded copper panel above rising to the top storey with moulded balconies to metal-framed windows and a tall wallhead parapet above. Later extensions have been added to the rear, there is moulded cyma recta detail to corner and the grey slate roof has wallhead and ridge stacks. The interior has been comprehensively modernised.
