Full Description

Villa, now in use as part of Albyn Hospital (NJ90NW2316), built in circa 1830 with later additions and alterations. It is a two-storey, basement and attic, three-bay double villa designed as one, constructed from tooled coursed granite that is finely finished to the margins. There is a rough-faced base course, ground and first floor cill courses, an eaves course, eaves blocking course and parapet. Predominantly timber sash and case windows are used, including small-pane upper sashes to ground floor and lying-pane glazing to the first floor of the principal elevation. The grey slate roof has lead ridges, coped skews with blocked skewputts, corniced gablehead and wallhead stacks with octagonal and circular cans and cast-iron rainwater goods. The principal north elevation has a broad pilastered ashlar doorpiece to the centre bay with stone steps to the central doorway. Low boundary walls to the north are surmounted by railings shared with 21 and 24 Albyn Place and there are high coped rubble walls to the rear. Albyn Place was originally built on the lands of Rubislaw, owned by James Skene who commissioned Archibald Elliot to prepare a scheme for Aberdeen based on the New Town in Edinburgh. Albyn Place was the only part of Elliot's scheme to be executed,
