Full Description
Cemetery, depicted on the OS 1st edition map. It had been extended to the south by the time of the 2nd edition map, taking in the site of Nellfield House (NJ90NW0761). The lodge, at the north end of the cemetery, was designed by James Souttar, 1881. It is single storey and attic, of 3-bays, with Scots baronial detailing. Built of tooled coursed grey granite ashlar, finely finished to the margins, Aberdeen bonded to the rear. It has segmental arched openings with chamfered reveals, spherical finials to the apexes of the gables, and curved angles corbelled out below the eaves. The principal elevation to the west has a gabled bay advanced to the right, piended slate roof with iron brattishing, a narrow arrowslit opening in the gablehead. A circular tower springs from the square plan porch, the tower with conical roof with three lucernes. The cemetery is enclosed by high granite rubble walls. At the lodge entrance square-plan ashlar gatepiers are surmounted by spherical finials, and low quadrant walls lead to the iron gates. The entrance on Great Western Road has square-plan gatepiers with pyramidal caps and iron gates. Within the cemetery there are 45 First and Second World War Commonwealth war graves. The cemetery also has a memorial to Alexander MacDonald father of the modern granite industry, a modest marker to paupers of the Aberdeen Female Orphas Asylum, and a large celtic cross erected in memory of photographer George Washington Wilson.
