Full Description

Former public toilets built in 1932, on the site of an earlier building depicted on historic OS maps. The front elevation is of granite ashlar and has the word 'SHELTER' engraved above the door. Photographic recording was carried out in April 2018 although at that time the north, east and south walls has been demolished. A subsequent watching brief carried out on the areas stripped of rubble recorded a pit and a possible post-hole base. The fill of the post-hole included modern wood fragments and the base of a late medieval jug, and it may be the remains of a medieval post-hole. The pit produced sherds of 19th - early 20th century pottery. Monitoring of trenches for gas and electricity cables recorded no further features or artefacts.
