Full Description
Remains of buildings depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. The northern building is situated at the top of the south bank of the River Don. The ruins have a gothic look and while their exact purpose is unknown, its location suggests that it was related to Woodside wall garden. It is built of granite blocks and brick, measuring 9.1 m from east to west. The southern building stands against a boundary wall on the north side of the Persley walled garden (NJ90NW0354). Building recording was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in 2014. The northernmost building is built into the slope of the River Don, and is two storey on the north side, and one above ground level on the south side which contains a central door. There is a small iron ring just beside the door above the ground buts its purpose is unknown. All of the walls contain small arched windows built of worked granite blocks. On the north wall is a large doorway and large mullioned window on the first floor, the doorway and lower part of the window infilled with brick. A loophole (dating from the Second World War) has been constructed in the infill of the doorway, part of the defences of Persley Bridge overlooking the River Don. A set of steps run down beside the east end of the building. The building probably dates from the late 18th century and may have been a gardener's cottage or summerhouse. To the south is a smaller building constructed of granite rubble, with an entrance on the south wall; it may have been related to the walled garden.
