Full Description
Commemorative stone unveiled on 3 May 2017 to mark the centenary of the death of World War I Victoria Cross recipient Robert Grierson Combe. Robert Combe was born in Aberdeen in 1888, and emigrated to Canada in 1906, later enlisting in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. In 1917 he was fighting with the 27th Battalion (City of Winnipeg) in the area around Vimy in France, and was killed during an assault on 3rd May on the German trenches near Acheville. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in saving the lives of many other soldiers.
