Full Description

Former teacher training college, which replaced a number of buildings depicted on the site on historic OS maps. On the 1st edition, this includes a timber yard, Free East Church School, Free South Church School and a stone yard. The OS Name book records the Free South Church School as a house in good repair then occupied by a school, attended by 450 pupils, the Free East Church School as a house used as a school for 240 pupils. By the time of the 2nd edition there had been some changes to the buildings, including partial infilling of the timber yard. In 1909 John Alexander Off Allan was appointed architect for a new teacher training college, and plans were approved by the Aberdeen Provincial Committee for the training of Teachers in 1909. On the 1926 OS 25in map it is named 'Aberdeen Training Centre. In 1968 the building, in use as the College of Education, was purchased by Robert Gordon's University and the interior considerably altered and modernised. Standing building survey was carried out by MAS in January 2018 during conversion to a hotel. It is of granite, originally with slate roofs, only in part remaining, the windows also largely replaced. The St Andrew Street facade has a central entrance in a slightly projecting block. When the building was designed the flat roof s on sections of the N St Andrew Street and Charlotte Street blocks were used as a roof garden (in part to provide a playground for children who attended the demonstration school at the college) originally surrounded by a granite wall with iron railings.
