Full Description
Stone paving slab, unveiled in 2017, commemorating Captain Archibald Bisset Smith who was awarded the Victoria Cross on 10 March 1917. Captain Bisset was born in Cults, Aberdeen, and was a former pupil of Robert Gordon's College, joining the merchant navy in 1895, and serving with the New Zealand Shipping Company. During the First World War he served as Captain on the Rakaia, Huruni and Otaki. In March 2017 Captain Bisset command of the SS Otaki, a cargo ship sailing from London to New York, when it was attacked by the German raider Moewe. The Otaki returned fire but when the Otaki was badly damaged he ordered the crew to abandon ship, remaining on board as the ship sank. A 14 year old midshipman, William Esson Martin, also went down with the ship.
