Full Description

Hospital, designed by William Smith 1874-77, and extended and enlarged by John Rust, 1892. The administration block to the centre is flanked to west and east by pavilions, with a north lodge to the north of the reception block and a smaller lodge to the east. The hospital was initially established in a disused match factory, after an outbreak of smallpox prompted the Corporation to provide more hospital accommodation. The 1870s hospital was constructed of concrete with no wooden floors or walls, and had four single storey pavilions, for 72 patients, as well as administration building, laundry and disinfecting station. In 1887 a wooden smallpox pavilion was built. The late 19th century additions (opened in 1895) doubled the size of the ward blocks, and also included nurses' bedrooms, laundry, mortuary and a new gateway and entrance lodge to Urquhart Road as well as installation of wooden floors and panelling. The accommodation block is near-symmetrical and of 3 storeys, the central bay forming a tower at the second floor. To east and west are Italianate pavilions, predominantly single storey on an H plan.
