Full Description

Former school, designed by William Smith 1875-6, and enlarged by Kelly and Nicol in 1892, and further expanded in the 20th century. It was part of a scheme of new school construction in heavily populated areas. On the OS 1st edition the site is occupied by houses and other properties including a smithy. The 2nd edition map shows the school in the southeastern part of the site, and a granite works in the northwestern part. A standing building survey of the school was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in January - February 2015. Seven buildings were recorded. The former school building, in Scots Baronial style is if granite and 2-3 storeys, with an 1876 date plaque on the southwest facade, and tower, of three storeys, on the northwest end of this elevation. At the rear of the building is a castellated stair turret. Northeast of the school, most recently in use as a nursery, is a building contemporary with the main school, built of granite and of two storeys. North of the school is a former gym hall, of granite blocks with an added boiler house at the southeast corner, and chimney. At the north end of the site, the Janitor's House was probably built in the 1930s. The survey also recorded two open sided shelters, one with cast iron pillars. Now student accommodation. A plaque in the school commemorates the artist Alberto Morrocco who attended the school.
