Full Description
Parish church, designed by Duncan McMillan 1873-4, depicted on the OS 2nd edition map with attached church hall. Built as a United Free Church, it later became Ferryhill South Church. It is in Early Gothic style, on a basilica plan, built of coursed grey granite with finely finished margins. The principal, north, elevation is near-symmetrical, with a gabletted 1883 porch on the ground floor, and large rose window in the gablehead above. A square-plan, 3-stage tower adjoins the west side of the elevation; it has gabletted clock faces between pinnacles at the base of an octagonal stone spire with a gilded crucifix at the apex. Windows are predominantly timber framed leaded diamond-pane, with stained glass to a rose window and south windows. The interior has a polygonal section wagon roof spanning the aisle-less nave. Side galleries were added by D and JR McMillan in 1896. There is a World War I communion table. The church hall was added in 1885, and extended in 1894 and 1061. Surrounding the churchyard are 20th century low coped granite walls, the railings removed, with gatepiers to the northwest. The church contains both First World War and Second World war memorial windows and war memorials with names of those from two previous Ferryhill Congregations (Ferryhill North and Ferryhill South) who lost their lives in the wars. A First World War bronze tablet commemorates 'MEN BELONGING TO THE CONGREGATION OF FERRYHILL PARISH CHURCH, WHO IN THE GREAT WAR DIED IN DEFENCE OF FREEDOM AND CIVILISATION'. A war memorial of the 51st Highland Division (Signals) , and commemorating losses in the First and Second World Wars. was previously in the former Fonthill Barracks. A memorial commemorating members of the Aberdeen Boys Brigade/1st company Old Boys Association killed in the two world wars, was unveiled in 1921. The church also has a number of brass plaques dedicated to those lost in the wars. The church also contains the Piper Alpha Memorial Window designed by Jayne Bayliss, commemorating the 167 lives lost in the 1988 disaster on the Piper Alpha platform in the North Sea. Now Devana Parish Church.
