Full Description
Cathedral of St Mary of the Assumption, designed by Alexander Ellis 1860, the spire added by RG Wilson (of Ellis and Wilson) in 1877, and sculpture by Alex Brodie. It comprises nave and aisles with clerestory and dormers to the aisle roofs, and a chancel. The interior has been modernised. There is a 2-storey clergy house, of pinned rubble with V-plan dormers. Attached to the church are a presbytery and church halls. The present Cathedral Halls served originally as a Franciscan convent until the sisters returned to Glasgow in 1900. In front of the cathedral stands a war memorial commemorating losses in both the First and Second World Wars. Unveiled in October 1921, it is a crucifix set into a stepped base resting on a broad plinth. The inscription reads: PRO DEO ET PATRIA MORTUIS 1914-1918 'REX MUNDI DEFUNCTOS NOS PRO SUIS LEGIBUS IN AETERNAE VITAE RESURRECTIONE SUSCITABIT. MACHAB. II VII 9' 1939-1945. In the rear garden is a First World War stone of remembrance.
