Full Description

Former granary and warehouse, depicted on the OS Town Plan 1866-7. Standing building survey was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in March - April 2012. The granary building dates from the mid 19th century and is 3-storey with attic, tall with an M-gable. Built of snecked, coursed granite rubble with regularly spaced rectangular window openings, some infilled. To the west and east are 20th century extensions. Windows are predominantly 2-pane timber sash and case to the street elevations, replacements to the rear. The roof is of grey slate with cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior largely retains the original plan, with original timber flooring and cast-iron columns. Flanges to the columns would have enabled partitions to be slotted in between each column to create separate spaces for grain storage. On the north elevation is a commemorative plaque to John Forbes White which reads 'The Former Grainstore of John Forbes White 1831-1904 Merchant. Pioneer Photographer and patron of the arts'. White was an Aberdeen flour and corn merchant who became president of the British and Irish Association of Millers in 1888. The granary has been converted to offices and stores, most recently used by Aberdeen City Council as Whitespace, a community arts facility, art gallery store and archaeology unit offices.
