Full Description

Former flour, meal, barley and corn mill. Depicted on the OS 1st edition as Lady Mill (corn) which shows the mill with house and garden to the southwest. By the time of the 2nd edition it had been expanded and is annotated as a Bobbin Mill. Documentary research carried out by J Gilliatt in 2018 recorded evidence for the bobbin mill in the census (1891 - 1901), newspaper articles (between 1893 and 1898) and other documents. The bobbin business here was set up in Aberdeen (initially in Cotton Street) by J and JL Brebner after they left their bobbin mills in Inchmarlo and Bridge of Canny in Banchory in the late 1880s, the business moving to King Street in 1896. The premises were steam powered. Less than 18 months after the move the mill was severely damaged by fire, putting around 50 staff out of work. The building was reconstructed and business resumed, the mill remaining in business until 1973, still making bobbins and latterly wood plugs for the paper industry. After closure it was converted into a pub called The Bobbin, although part of the original building and additional buildings on the east side of the site have been removed. A watching brief was carried out by RLA in June - July 2022 during groundworks on the area north of the Bobbin, then in use as a car park. Although part of the mill building occupied this area, the only feature observed was the remains of one brick and mortar foundation pillar, together with scattered layers of sparse post-medieval demolition material, mainly of brick (none with any makers' marks).
