Full Description

Former hall of the Seven Incorporated Trades of Aberdeen, an organisation formed in the 16th century to to protect the rights and privileges of traders. It was built in 1846, replacing the original Trinity Hall of the Incorporated Trades built in Shiprow 1632 (and removed in the mid 19th century) - NJ90NW1236. Designed by John and William Smith, it is a 2-storey, 5-bay turreted and castellated Tudor-gothic building, built of grey granite ashlar. It has pointed segmental arched window openings with simple tracery. The stepped, crenellated parapet is punctuated by slender hexagonal ogee-domed turrets with similar turrets to the corners. The gateway from the original hall was rebuilt into a side wall to at the Denburn entrance. A central inscription read 'To ye glorie of God and comfort of the Poore, this Hows was given to the crafts by Mr William Guild, Doctor of Divinitie, Minister of Abdn:1633'. It was demolished in reconstruction work in the 1890s, although fragments, including the inscription were preserved. The building has been comprehensively altered and this former hall now provides the entrance to the Trinity Centre. The present Trinity Hall of the Seven Incorporated Trades of Aberdeen was built in 1966 on the corner of Great Western Road and Holburn Street (NJ90NW2267).
