Full Description

House dating from the mid 19th century, depicted on historic OS maps. It shown on the 1st edition set within wooded grounds with a steading range to the west, and another to the south, and a lodge on the southeast boundary. Northeast of the house is a walled garden (NJ90NW0535). There had been some alterations to the house by the time of the 2nd edition map and the steading buildings to the west had been removed, that to the south reduced to a rectangular building. New buildings had been added northwest of the house. The principal block of the house is 5-bay, 2-storey roughly rectangular in plan with an entrance to the east. A single-storey wing extends north from the east side. There are asymmetrical gabled elevations, harled with undressed grey granite margins, gabletted dormer-headed windows to the main block with fleur-de-lys cusped timber bargeboards. The pitched slated roof has deeply overhanging eaves, and coped wallhead stacks. Photographic survey of the wall was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2012. The wall was in good condition, standing to a height of up to 2.4m on the west side and 1m on the east. It was up to 0.4m wide built of slaister-pointed random field rubble with a coping course of medium sized stones, many set on edge. Much of the grounds is now occupied by housing.
