Full Description

Walled garden of Danestone House (NJ90NW0721) built probably in the early 18th Century, and summerhouse, depicted on the OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. It was an extensive walled gardens with tall brick walls enclosing a rectangle which tapers to the east. There are some lean-to greenhouses within the wall to the east, and an octagonal brick tower at the southwest corner which appears to have been truncated from a larger building (NJ90NW0536). A building survey was carried out by Headland Archaeology in 2012 ahead of construction work in connection with the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route. The irregular plan of the garden may have been a consequence of the previous boundaries to the North, but the design also maximised available sunshine with a long run of South and Southwest facing walls. The garden was enclosed by a substantial brick wall with an octagonal brick tower in the Southwest corner, which may have been used as a summer house or small observation tower (NJ90NW0536) and which is annotated as a dovecot on current OS maps, it has rectangular glazed openings at ground level with 6-pane glazing, and arched single openings (bricked up) at first floor level, and a brick wallhead cope. During the second half of the 19th Century glasshouses and other outbuildings were added. Some of these were subsequently demolished and replaced with more glasshouses (some heated) and sheds at the East end during the first part of the 20th Century. The area was leased as a market garden for much of the 20th Century. Part of a garden path was recorded in a trial trenching evaluation (NJ90NW1270) by Headland Archaeology in 2013 ahead of the Third Don Crossing.
