Full Description
Well, dating from the 17th century, blocked up in 1840, and rebuilt and reopened in 1970. The above ground structure was removed in 2008 ahead of redevelopment of the site, and the location is now marked by a stone setting in the entrance to the hotel loading bay, with a plaque set onto the hotel wall behind. The superstructure of the well had been set in a coped granite rubble wall advanced from Strawberry Bank boundary wall, and with a round-arched well opening to the centre with a mesh cover. It is thought to have been involved in the 1644 Second Battle of Aberdeen. A plaque erected by the Corporation of the City of Aberdeen 1970 to upper right read 'THE HARDGATE WELL: This spring figured in the Battle of Justice Mills fought on 13th September 1644 between the Royalist forces under the Marquis of Montrose and the citizens of Aberdeen'. (see also NJ90NW1324). It is depicted on the OS 1st edition map but not on the 2nd edition. Recording of the well was carried out by Aberdeen City Council Archaeological Unit in 2008 during dismantling of the wellhead structure ahead of proposed development (see also NJ90NW1172). The well shaft was also uncovered and recorded: this was constructed of granite fieldstones bonded with mortar, and extended to 1.7m depth from the top of the stonework. An inscription in the cement adjacent to the street and including the date 'C McALLAN 1969 REBUILT' suggests that preparation for construction of the new wellhead took place that year. No deposits of archaeological interest apart from the well were recorded during the works.
