Full Description
Site of mills, also known as Woodside Mills, depicted on OS 1st and 2nd edition maps. The works included a range of industries, including calico printing a an early date. It was also the site of a waulk mill which was later converted to a copper mill, and then a snuff mill, which was subsequently enlarged in 1764. Around 1775 the lower parts of ground at Woodside were established as bleach fields and print fields. The cotton mill opened in 1785. In the 1790s Gordon, Barry and Company, owners of the mills, set up a scheme to train pauper orphan apprentices, and near to Woodside House the firm built a large dormitory in the style of a medieval fortress (NJ90NW0842). The cotton mill closed in 1850 and the buildings were purchased and used for paper making by Pirie and Sons. A substantial 6-storey mill dating from the early 19th century was largely demolished in 1900. The business ceased after two serious fires in 1920 and 1948. Various structures remain including lades. Building recording was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in 2014. See also NJ90NW0540, NJ90NW0542, NJ90NW0712, NJ90NW0541.
