Full Description

Early 19th century house, extended between 1838 and 1855, with further additions including addition of first floor in 1862. The 1st edition shows the house, named Braehead Cottage, with an L-plan range and rectangular building to the west, set within garden grounds. By the time of the 2nd edition, on which it is named Braehead, the rectangular building west of the house had been removed. The house is rectangular, two-storey with single storey outshots and a basement to the rear. The ground floor is built of random and squared granite rubble built to courses with squared dressed quoins, the first floor is of squared coursed granite with some pinnings and dressed quoins. Now named Glover House, from 1851 it was the home of the Glover family. Thomas Glover left Aberdeen in 1857 and began a shipbuilding business in Nagasaki which formed the foundation of the Mitsubishi Corporation. Now in use as a museum. A brown plaque on the gatepiers records this as the family home of Thomas Blake Glover the Scottish Samurai (1838-1911).
