Full Description

Viaduct/bridge, built 1800-1805, one of a series of bridges as part of civic improvements to open up new areas of the city and carries Union Street over the Denburn valley and the railway line. The original designs were by David Hamilton for a triple span structure, but after work was started discrepancies in the estimate and levels the contract was cancelled. Further designs were submitted by Thomas Fletcher, engineer, for a single-span arch bridge in dressed granite masonry was approved by Telford and built 1801-5. To reduce weight it was built with two transverse tunnels within each spandrel. It has a single segmental arch with a span of 130 feet, with two semi-circular blind arches above the east abutment and a single arch over the west. All of the stone was hand dressed. The bridge was widened in 1905-8 with the addition on each side of a three-pinned steel arch rib which was tied to the main structure, to design by William Dyack, Burgh Surveyor. On the parapets are cast iron leopard finials designed by Sidney Boyes and added when the bridge was first widened n 1910. The bridge was further widened in 1964 resulting in the removal of the southern parapet.
