Full Description

Remains of the designed landscape of Seaton House (NJ90NW0143). Much of it is now Seaton Park, purchased by Aberdeen City Council in 1947. Annual horse races were held here between 1923 and 1928. In the 17th century the estate was under the lairdship of the Gordon family, who owned it until 1742 when it passed to the Forbes family. Seaton House was probably built in the early 18th century. A 1773 plan of Aberdeen shows the house with other buildings to the northeast, and, east of the house, a long narrow rectangular canal. This is also depicted on the Roy's Map (1747-52), but does not appear on the OS 1st edition map, by which time the house had been altered and the grounds landscaped. At circa NJ 93923 09222 is a well with stone built surround. Four mature sycamore trees (circa NJ 93944 08869) overlooked by St Machar Cathedral are thought to be daughter trees of original sycamores planted in commemoration of the Auld Alliance during the 15th century. Centred NJ9410308956 are seven trees planted by Friends of Seaton Park to mark the 70 years of the park's existence. Also to commemorate the anniversary, a Community Orchard was planted west of the play area in 2017. In 2016 during creation of a new wetlands area an ancient tree trunk and a glacial erratic were found under layers of silt.
