Full Description

Former bank designed by Archibald Simpson, 1839-42 and built for the Head Office of the North of Scotland bank. In Renaissance style, it is three-storey with Corinthian columned quadrant corner entrance portico comprising four double-height Corinthian columns. The quadrant corner is surmounted by a coloured terracotta statue of Ceres. The lower bay to the South elevation has a tall round-arched opening leading to Logie Pend. Built of channelled grey granite ashlar, with coursed tooled granite to the rear. First and second storey windows are set in recesses with aprons with carved cornucopia motifs dividing the storeys. Internally the ground floor has an opulent decorative scheme, with fluted Corinthian pilasters to the former banking hall, patterned tesserae floor and a gilded Parthenon frieze. Later the Clydesdale bank, now a public house, the Archibald Simpson. A World War II memorial, comprising two bronze plaques within ornate frames, unveiled 12 March 1949 is now in the bank at 62 Union Street (NJ90NW1150).
