Full Description
Well, relocated here in the mid 20th century. St John's Well is depicted on the OS 1st edition map at NJ93520632 (NJ90NW1193). Mentioned in 1696, the well originally stood on St John's Croft. A building was erected over it in 1852, when a Latin inscription was added which translates to 'St John's Spring, Renovated by the Superintendent of Public Works, 1852' . It was moved in 1885 (when Rosemount Viaduct was built) to Skene Row. Following rebuilding in 1852 when the Latin inscription was added, in 1955 was moved to its present site in 24 Albyn Place (NJ9289705779). It takes the form of a U-pan of ashlar with seats. A recessed panel in the back wall is backed by a Maltese Cross, the tooled lintel above bearing the inscription: 'SANCTI JOANNIS FONS AB OPERUM PUBLICORUM CURATORIBUS REFECTUS A. D. M D CCCLII'
