Full Description

Churchyard and site of the Church of St Mary Ad Nives (of the Snows), founded in 1497 as the parish church when Old Aberdeen became a Burgh of Barony. Later known as the Snow Kirk. It was disused from the time of the Reformation and the church was demolished in 1640 and the ground brought into cultivation. The shape of the church is supposedly outlined by the modern walls which enclose a small Roman Catholic burial ground, however, this area is probably too wide to indicate the breadth of the church. The early 16th century gateway of the churchyard survives, in the garden wall of 19 College Bounds. Above the arch are the arms of the founder, Bishop Elphinstone.
