Full Description
Foghorn built in 1902, depicted on the OS 3rd edition map, annotated as 'Fog Siren'. It replaced an earlier foghorn shown on the 2nd edition map to the a little to the south. The siren is known as the 'Torry Coo' because of its low sonorous tones; it used compressed air to produced four blasts of two high and two low notes every four minutes. The air was produced by three oil engines housed in a stone structure within the grounds of the Lighthouse Commissioners surrounding the lighthouse. The air was conveyed to tanks from which it is fed to the horn which was worked by a man posted on lookout duty. The foghorn was decommissioned in the 1980s.
