Full Description

Light tower of riveted iron construction, built in 1842, designed by harbour engineer James Abernethy. It is a tall, slender, octagonal-section tower, on an octagonal plinth. There is a small gallery on the seaward side, supported on paired cast-iron brackets, and a fixed external ladder. The lantern has long vertical panes on the seaward side. The roof is pyramidal with a ventilator and wind-vane. See NJ90NE0127 for West Leading Light. Construction in the 19th century of the North Pier and South Breakwater at the entrance to Aberdeen Harbour restricted the width of the navigation channel, necessitating a navigation aid to vessels entering the harbour.
