Full Description
Restored dovecot, possibly built in the 16th to 17th century, although more likely built at the same time as the nearby manse (NJ86SE0065) in 1820-30. Restored in 1981. It is a small square dovecote, constructed from roughly pointed and squared red sandstone with tooled sandstone dressings. The centre entrance has paired flight holes above the lintel, fronted by a small alighting ledge. The stumpy octagonal pyramidal tooled ashlar roof probably re-used material from the former church steeple, and has with small paired or single flight holes in the south and west facing facets. There are stumpy angle wallhead finials with triangular caps. Internally the dovecot is very small, but it accommodates sixty-two stone nesting boxes.
Period Notes
Probably built in 1820-30, although may be 16th-17th century. Restored in 1981. It was listed on 16/04/1971, and changed from a category B to A on 25/05/1990.
