Full Description

Remains of Old Troup House. In the 17th century Major Alexander Garden, the first of the Gardens of Troup, erected 'a modest two-storied house of large clay bricks'. This manor-house , which was the principal messuage of the barony of Troup, was replaced in 1763 by 'a large and distinctly grim looking mansion'. To the north of the house site two vaulted cellars, or possibly ice-houses still survive, although in a dilapidated condition with trees growing on the top. This latter house is now completely demolished (levelled in the early 1960s), with only heaps of rubble lying, some of which may cover cellars. A third Troup house (NJ86NW0044) was erected further to the southwest in 1898.

Period Notes
Erected between 1653-62; replaced 1763.
