Full Description

Monquhitter Parish Church is surrounded by an old graveyard, with a large 19th century cemetery alongside to the east. There have been up to five churches on this site, the earliest documented one being 1649. The present church was built in 1868 on the site of the older buildings, although the 18th century manse (now privately owned) has survived. The church is a simple rectangular building, constructed with tooled and coursed red sandstone blocks and ashlar quoins. The double-pitch roof is slated. It has a tall, advanced central bay upon which is a large bellcote. There are twin round-arched doorways with rectangular doors and fanlights. Above is a wide round-arched window with thick plate tracery in ashlar sandstone. The tall bellcote is pedimented and has a small round-arched recess in which hangs the bell. Within the churchyard is a monument to William Cumine, erected shortly after 1707 and reconstructed in the early 19th century. A long inscription is set between relief colonnettes with entablature, sculptured panels comprising the coat of arms and W.C. monogram above, and skeletons and other emblems of mortality below. The churchyard contains the Commonwealth War Grave of Private A. Morrison, Canadian Infantry, who died 19 June 1920.
