Full Description
Farmstead and dovecot, built on the site of an earlier manor and mansion house. Auchry House, or Meikle Auchry, was a 'Laird's house' which succeeded the Castle of Auchry (NJ75SE0007). Writing in 1721, Mr Hepburn reported that the 'mannor of Auchry was the dwelling of Cumming of Auchry' who in 1732 was one of the lesser barons of Aberdeenshire. His father, Sir William Cumming, had bought Meikle Auchry in circa 1667. Auchry House, a three-storey mansion house apparently dating from 1767 was demolished in 1967. Set above its door was a 17th century armorial stone which presumably came from the earlier manor-house. A modern farmstead now occupies the site. There is a plain walled garden with a 2-storey garden house, now derelict, dating to the 18th century. A B-listed circular dovecot, also dated to the 18th century, still stands. It is rubble-built tapered dovecot with red sandstone dressings, two rat courses, a flat slab roof with oculus and stone nesting boxes inside.
