Full Description

A desk-based assessment and reconnaissance field survey in 2008 ahead of a proposed windfarm over this area, recorded a number of features. A short section of hollow-way at NJ 8209859015 measured 2-3 m wide and 0.4 m deep, a section of which had been revetted where it crosses a small burn. It may be a continuation of a track shown on the OS 1st edition map. A section of turf field bank was visible in dense heather at NJ 8203858759. The bank is aligned north-south, 50 m long 1-1.5 m wide and 0.5 m high. It may be the remains of an earlier field boundary . A row of small clearance cairns were recorded at NJ 8196658963. Eighteen cairns were identified, ranging from 2-12 m in length and 1-5 m in width, standing between 0.3 and 0.4 m high. They reflect the edge of an improved pasture field. A trackway/old road depicted on the OS 1st edition map running from Middlehill to the old parish boundary between King Edward and Aberdour parishes, was identified during field survey as a broad heathery terrace 5 m wide and running for circa 1 km across the moorland. No metalled surface was visible. It is bounded on each side by a ditch 0.5 m deep and large bank 2 m wide and 0.8 m high. A cairn at NJ 8209859015 was thought to be recent, relating to repairs of the track. A line of 8 grouse butts lay at NJ 8235658959.
