Full Description

Monument to William Dingwall Fordyce M. P. of Brucklay Castle (1836-1875), built in 1876-77 on the site of a stone circle. There is no trace of the stone circle as the stones were removed circa 1770 for the purpose of building the Free Church manse (NJ 8827 4788 - now in use as a care home). The monument was designed by James Matthews, in a Georgian style. It comprises a pinned squared granite ground floor with triple keyblocked archway leading to a spiral stair inside a brick well. There are two upper stages contained within a granite ashlar spire or steeple, of Gibbs type. The monument was restored in 1991. Fordyce was a Liberal M. P. between 1866 and 1875. He pioneered benefits for his tenants, provided transportation services (including the building a railway station at Maud NJ94NW0034) and advocated for the rural economy. He was buried on his estate at Brucklay Castle (NJ95SW0010), where an obelisk marks his grave (NJ94NW0078). The monument is an Ordnance Survey trigonometrical survey intersected station (sighting point) depicted on the 2nd and 5th edition OS maps. There is an earlier Ordnance Survey trigonometrical survey point (OS trig point) depicted on the 1st edition OS map prior to the monument's construction.
