Full Description

Monument dedicated to Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Alexander Gordon, younger brother of the George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen, who was killed at the Battle of Waterloo on the 18th June 1815. Erected shortly after 1815 to the south of Haddo House (NJ83SE0042). It takes the form of a tall ashlar granite obelisk, with inscription: 'TO THE MEMORY OF SIR ALEXANDER GORDON K. C. B., COLONEL SCOTS GUARDS AND AIDE DE CAMP TO THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON, AFTER SERVING HIS COUNTRY WITH DISTINCTION HE WAS KILLED AT THE BATTLE OF WATERLOO JUNE 18 1815. THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED BY HIS BROTHER GEORGE 4TH EARL OF ABERDEEN.'. Lt-Colonel Gordon, Wellington's youngest aide-de-camp, suffered a mortal wound in the leg during the battle and was attended to by Wellington's personal physician. Wellington himself wrote to the 4th Earl to inform him of the tragic news. Another memorial dedicated to Lt-Colonel Gordon can be found at Waterloo, inscribed in French and English, the only British memorial to an individual at the battle site. The monument is set within the Haddo House designed landscape (NJ83SE0076).
