Full Description
Remains of enclosure and area of rig and furrow, recorded during a walkover survey by Mercer and Ralston in 1989 prior to a proposed extension of Bellmuir Quarry (NJ83NE0181). The trace of the enclosure in the east is defined by a low spread turf and stone bank, with maximum diameters of the surviving portion being internally 7.7 m, and externally 12.2 m. There is no entrance in the surviving portion. Traces of rig and furrow cultivation run west-southwest to east-northeast located across an area adjacent to the west of the enclosure. A number have subsequently served as trackways. A desk based assessment carried out by Rathmell Archaeology in 2016 ahead of proposed development of Bellmuir Quarry and subsequent field observation noted the enclosure site (S37), and rig and furrow site (S53) as present but did not record any further details, with the sites located outwith the proposed development area.
