Full Description
Tower-house, possibly built on the site of an earlier castle on the site as the land originally belonged to the family of Schevez. It was purchased in 1512 by Alexander Gray and the present house was built for Gilbert Gray in circa 1585 by the master mason Thomas Leper. The original house was 3-storey, rubble-built L-plan with entrance and corbelled stair turret in the northeast re-entrant angle. A three-storey piended northeast wing was added in circa 1750, and a west extension of the main block in circa 1780. It was burnt down in 1900 and rebuilt 1902 with considerable internal work done in 1931. It was restored again in 1934 when the northeast wing was removed and the east and west wings were remodelled in Scots 16th century idiom. The crowsteps were restored and the courtyard wall rebuilt with a gatehouse and new wallhead to the well in the courtyard. The large 17th century sundial in the garden (NJ83NE0184) and a walled garden that is probably 18th century in date (NJ83NE0183). See NJ83NE0162 for designed landscape.
