Full Description

Former church, now in residential use, and surrounding graveyard depicted on the 1st and 2nd historic OS maps. Keithhall and Kinkell Parish Church was built in the late 18th century (1772 dated skewputt) and is located in a rural situation on the wooded edge of the estate of Keithall Manse. There is a small graveyard to the south and east of the church contained by stone walls. The church is a simple rectangular structure and aligned east-west. It was built with coursed, roughly-shaped granite blocks and has a slate roof. Interestingly it is said that this roof was removed from the much older Kinkell Church in the parish when Keithall Church was built and used to roof the new church, meaning the roof of Keithall is much older than its walls. There is a simple rectangular bellcote with small, stumpy pinnacles. The bell is hung from a wooden and metal support and is rung by an external pull. Interior was recast in the 1920s. Stained glass window memorials to past ministers and elders of the church. Formerly a stain glass window commemorating men of the parish who died in the First World War and brass plaque First World War war memorial, both removed to Fintray Church (NJ81NW0104) in 2019. Within the churchyard is the First World War Commonwealth war grave of Private Alexander Shearer, Gordon Highlanders. A second graveyard is located a short distance to the north west (at NJ 8010 2100) but it is not known if this is linked to the church or a private burial ground. A standing building survey was carried out by Cameron Archaeology in November 2023 ahead of proposed alterations. The church is of rectangular plan with vestry on the north wall. Internally, stairs on the east and west walls provided access to the gallery, those on the east removed probably around 1920 when the pulpit was moved to its present position. The EH Lawton of Aberdeen organ is dated 1907, but the pipes have been removed.
