Full Description

House, still in use, built in the early 19th century with later additions, depicted on the historic OS maps as Cromlethill, with a sundial shown in the southeast of the garden, ranges, outbuildings and a pump to the northeast. The centre block is two-storey and three-window, and is stuccoed with lining out and first floor belt course, a wooden Doric column porch and a piended roof. Set-back are one-window wings, with roofs behind plain parapets. There is a square stair-tower and later broad-eaved addition to the back, and simple distinctive interior work. A blue and green glazed tiled commemorative plaque is set into the enclosing wall to the street, inscribed 'Birthplace of Sir Patrick Manson, GC, MG, MD, FRCP, DCS, LLD, FRS, 1844-1922, the father of tropical medicine'. It was erected by the London School of Tropical Medicine, which was founded by him in 1899. The current OS edition map shows the sundial in the southwest of the garden, and the pump is no longer shown. A photographic survey was carried out in 2022 prior to proposed redevelopment.
