Full Description

Remains of burial ground and site of church. St John's was the old church of Auquhorthies, of which nothing remains within a burial ground of the Society of Friends. The walls of the burial ground were re-built by John Forbes of Blackford circa 1826 with round angles, raised at the gate with cast-iron gates. The Society of Friends was strong in Tarves and engaged the attention of the kirk session and presbytery from 1665. It is one of few Quaker burial grounds in Aberdeenshire. The burial ground is no longer in use. There are two upright polished red granite tombstones in the graveyard, one to Rear Admiral John Leith of Leith Hall and Blackford (d. 1864), the other to Alexander Forbes of Blackford.
