Full Description
Castle, and site of later mansion. The castle is 4-storey and attic, comprising a tall rectangular keep with rounded angles. There are richly detailed angle turrets and a richly corbelled battlement walk exclusively on the south side. It dates from the 16th Century, though the lower part is perhaps earlier: it was completed in the early-17th Century. The gate piers date to the late-17th or early-18th Century.
The castle was deserted in circa 1775, repaired in 1801, and was incorporated into a large, baronial, neo-Gothic mansion between 1874-1875. This was subsequently demolished when the castle was restored between 1964-1967. The interior is now mainly of 20th century date, but the main features of the original construction are the 3-chambered vaulted ground floor, vaulted first floor, and complex wall stairs and chambers.
