Full Description
Canal milestone on the Aberdeen to Inverurie canal which now stands at Kirkton. It marked 12 and a half miles from Aberdeen. This canal milestone, which originally stood about 800m north-northwest of Kirkton farmsteading, now forms the centrepiece of a rockery in the garden immediately west of the farmhouse there. The granite marker has been sunk into the ground and only the upper 0.65m of the stone is now visible, though even this is largely obscured by the presence of an adjacent young leylandii. The stone measures about 0.3m in diameter and the domed top bears an angled facet on which is incised the number 12½, the distance between the point where the milestone originally stood and the end of the canal in Aberdeen.
